Dr M S Swaminathan chose to associate with us to institute an award in his name. What greater testimony can there be to the fact that this award is now in its 26th year.

As many of us know, the Dr M S Swaminathan Award for Environmental Protection is presented to either an Individual, Company or Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which has contributed, either directly or indirectly, to heightening environmental protection and awareness, in any part of the world. This year’s awardee is another doyen in the field of plant genetics and his imprint is present not only in India but across the world. During his leadership of ICAR from 1994 to 2001, Dr Paroda modernized India’s national agricultural research system (NARS) and created more than 30 new institutions in crops, horticulture, livestock, natural resource management, fisheries, agricultural engineering, and social science sectors. He received the Padma Bhushan award in 1998.


The Chief Guest for the day was the Hon’ble Governor of Telangana Dr Smt. Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Dr Sowmya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, WHO, who felicitated Dr R S Paroda. She highlighted that Dr Paroda and his body of work is an inspiration for future generations.

The Chief Guest Hon’ble Governor of Telangana Dr Smt Tamilisai Soundararajan in the address appreciated the role of Rotary especially in creating awareness amongst people on various health issues like polio.  She wished Dr M S Swaminathan on his birthday. She believes that the protection of the environment should start at home. She emphasized that we need to conserve our natural resources and augment our agricultural practices to transfer a liveable planet to future generations. She said Dr Paroda has made invaluable contributions to the field of agriculture and he truly deserves the award.
