Greetings to RCME family !

We are at the half way point of Rotary Year and have plenty to look forward to in 2018. Let me first wish each of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year and Pongal.

Looking back at the past six months I can’t be happier with the kind of activities in all avenues of service. All this would not be possible without the support and cooperation of each of you. Every member of the club contributed in some way or the other and that’s what makes this club contributed in some way or the other abd that’s what makes this club very special!

While we completed two Global Grant projects, the application for the third one with RKM was made for USD 108000/- or around Rs. 75 lakhs. We also planned a fourth GG with V Excel and hope to see both these projects taking off in the last quarter of the Rotary year. Massive load of work awaits W2 F3 as we planned to take the winners of corporation scholl to NASA in USA. Prabhuram, Magesh and VAR have taken on a challenging task. The final is planned in the first half of February and before that a 5 day orientation is planned for all the 32 children qualified to the finals. All these efforts have taken W2 F3 to a different orbit.

We have also taken up an ambitious project of training the teachers of around 60 scholls between this and next year for Dyslexic techniques. This is a six day program, for each school, along with Madras Dyslexic Association. Each progoram costs Rs. 60000/- and training for ten such schools are planned for the year. The objective is to train 35 to 40 teachers of each school and they in turn identify 10 children over a period of 3 years making a huge impact to the children and their parents. I wish to thank Anns for supporting this intiative.

Paul Harris Cricket Carnival, which the whole district looks forward to, has arrived with inaugural match starting on 6th January. Chairman of the event, Gopal, is leaving no stone unturned to make this another memorable carnival. We can look forward to five continuous weeks of entertainment culminating with valedictory at Umayal and Pals’ house.

In the month of December, we had an enjoyable fellowship hosted by Ravidas and 20 other members in grand style at Hotel Hyatt with an air of festivity and holiday mood all around. Around 56 from RCME wwnt on a piligrimage trip to Tirupathi. Thanks to Rajmohan’s contacts and his ever helping attitude, everyone had a wonderful darshan. Thanks to Badri and VAR for coordinating and organising the trip.

At the half way mark of the year we have collected around USD 55000/- towards Rotary foundation, which is no mean an achievement.  I thank the members for their generosity and Srinivasa Rao for their efforts.

In membership we inducted 7 new members and three more are going through the motions, which completes the targeted 10 additions for the year. However, one disappointment is the difficulty in addressing the gender diversity. We have planned 3 lady members among the targeted 10 but could only add one. I urge members to kindly recommend a couple of prospective lady members and let us target this for the new year calendar year.

December is also a month of elections both at the district and clun level. At the district level Rtn. Muthupalaniappan was elected for the post of District Governor for 2020-21. I congratulate Selvan on his election and best wishes to RMN and his team for a great year of office.

Our club is also pleased to honour Kalaimamini Priyadarshani Govind, foremost Bharata Natyam Exponent with Vocational Excellence award on 24th January 2017. Our Honorary member and legend of Bharatanatyam Dr. Padma Subbramanian consented to be the chief guest of the function.

It’s indeed an honour to lead such a prestigious club. And I look forward to 6 more months of frenetic activities.

With Best Wishes

Yours in Rotary

B.S. Purshotham

President – 2017-18
